Chair
The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care is looking to appoint a Chair to The Health Research Authority (HRA). The HRA is responsible for improving the UK’s research regulation environment, creating a streamlined approval process to help researchers develop high quality studies and to facilitate a thriving science and research environment for health that strengthens the UK’s global position. Its systems act as the gateway for research applications, ranging from observational studies in care settings, tissue banks and research databases, to large, multi-centre clinical trials of new medicines and advanced therapeutics.
As Chair you will be the public face of the HRA and responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, ensuring the committee works collaboratively across a national system of Arm’s Length Bodies (ALBs), as well as with key organisations across the health and social care system. You must oversee the HRA’s contribution to the Government’s health and growth missions’ vision by making the UK a world leading place to do research which people can trust.
In addition, you must support and challenge the Executive Committee whilst providing leadership to the HRA, setting a vision and inspiring high standards. Full details of the role and responsibilities of the Chair can be found in the candidate information pack.
Applicants must have excellent communication along with strong strategic leadership skills with a significant record of achievement at the highest levels in the public or private sector and the proven ability to lead an organisation through ongoing change and adaption, during a time of constrained finances and ideally involving a digital transformation.
With the ability to drive forward the highest standards of board level and public sector accountability you must have demonstrable interest in the work of the HRA and understanding of the opportunities and challenges it faces with experience in a relevant field including research regulation and governance, medicine, health or social care research or medical ethics.
Remuneration will be £45,000 per annum for a time commitment of two days per week. The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care determines the length of appointment, which may be for up to a maximum of 4 years.
