Assistant Director – Data, Research and Insight

Circa. £120,000

London or Manchester

The General Medical Council (GMC) is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. We work with doctors, patients, and other stakeholders to support good, safe patient care across the four countries of the United Kingdom. Over the last few years, we have significantly developed our capabilities and systems for managing the data and qualitative intelligence that we collect through our regulatory role and maximised its value both in our regulatory operations and in the insights, we can bring to support wider improvement across the health and care system.

This is a significant senior leadership position, coming at an exciting and challenging time of change for us. Our Assistant Director – Data, Research and Insight will play a high-profile role, leading our work in this area and making a direct contribution to our operational and strategic objectives. You will lead teams of data analysts, researchers, and others, totalling about 50 staff.  These teams support our regulatory activities and provide insights on our regulatory work and the wider health and care workforce environment.  They produce a wide range of publications to disseminate our work and engage in activities and partnerships to influence wider policies.  More information can be found on our website about our Data and Research here.

Reporting to the Director of Strategy & Policy, this role will help shape new priorities for us, exploiting new approaches to data analysis, deriving insight from research and intelligence and exploring new ways of sharing data and insight across health and care organisations for mutual benefit. You will bring innovation and vision to the role, together with the ability to work and influence across the organisation at the highest levels and represent us at senior level with other health organisations and interest groups. You will bring a fresh perspective to the way we think and how we use our data and research to support our wider work and influence within the healthcare system.

You will bring deep and demonstrable expertise in leading data, analysis or research functions at a senior level, exceptional strategic thinking skills and a proven track record of supporting organisational objectives through the innovative use of data and research. You will bring outstanding interpersonal skills, together with the ability to lead and further develop high performing teams. Politically astute with outstanding relationship-building and communication skills, you will demonstrate the insight, analytical skills, strategic vision and determination to get things done in this uniquely interesting and demanding role.

Our organisation is built on fairness and trust – the trust of patients and the medical profession. Underpinned by our core values of Excellence, Fairness, Transparency, Collaboration and Integrity, we provide an inclusive working environment where everyone is valued and we welcome new perspectives and ideas that you may bring. We have placed equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of our corporate strategy, both as a regulator of an increasingly diverse medical profession and as an organisation. We particularly encourage and welcome applications to this role from women, black and minority ethnic people and disabled applicants as part of our commitment to address under-representation in our senior leadership.

You’ll benefit from being part of an organisation that is genuinely committed to its people with several excellent benefits including 30 days holidays per year, a defined contribution pension scheme with a generous employer contribution of 15%, and hybrid and flexible working.
